Storing as a form of care
Lagerung als Fürsorge (Storing as a form of care) is a collective action. Together, we explore the site as a resource, collect and preserve its elements, and give them a new order—as objects somewhere between sculpture and storage, as a spatial arrangement, or as an archive. Pragmatic and poetic at once.
Storage is an act of care and a form of conscious, embodied knowledge. By moving materials piece by piece, we come to understand their substance, their origin, and their potential for an extended lifespan.
On the site of former military barracks, the buildings have been slowly disintegrating for years. Ruins, traces, and materials have merged into the landscape, some of them reclaimed by nature. What has already disappeared? How can what remains be preserved?
Historically, practices of preservation—haystacks, woodpiles, dry stone walls, and the like—have always embodied a logic and an aesthetic that extend beyond mere pragmatism. This knowledge is more relevant today than ever.
New uses are to emerge on the site without losing the stories embedded within or the resources that already exist. This is where we begin.
A provisional response to an open question.
We invite local stakeholders, neighbours, and curious visitors to contribute to a shared process of making and reflection: How do we want to engage with what is already here? What remains when we stop always beginning anew?
The project is not an endpoint but a moment within a cycle: between origin and future use, between decay and renewal. It asks how this intermediate state can be made visible, useful, and perhaps even habitable.
We welcome everyone interested in future places, circular construction, and extending the lifespan of materials—the community of creative practitioners who want to activate the site, local residents, and anyone interested in architecture, landscape architecture, and urban development.
