Workshop: Jointly developing ideas for an interactive game promoting building preservation & a new culture of conversion
The workshop marks a first milestone in the development of the game. Participants will work together to define key parameters and principles for its design.
The game aims to fill a gap in architectural and cultural education by making different scenarios for dealing with existing buildings and structures tangible through play. At its core will be real-life decision-making processes—from demolition-driven approaches and adaptive reuse to renovation, heritage conservation, and the participatory development of existing buildings.
Demolition should be experienced as the worst solution from an ecological, social, and cultural perspective, while the values and potentials of existing buildings should become visible and tangible. For example, event cards could simulate real-world factors influencing decision-making: changes in heritage protection categories, the discontinuation of funding programmes, protests by citizens’ initiatives, or economic pressure from investors.
In this way, the game aims to make social interdependencies and complex decision-making processes tangible and encourage new ways of seeing and thinking. It should provide an accessible entry point to complex topics, inviting players to question decisions, weigh different interests, and experience their consequences. And, of course, to have fun playing!
A creative workshop atmosphere and refreshments will be provided.
