Sustainable Renovation of Existing Buildings Using Bio-based Materials: The Example of a Small End-of-Row House from the 1920s

Preservation and energy-efficient renovation are the keys to a building stock that is fit for the future. In particular, the renovation of owner-occupied single-family homes presents both great potential and a major challenge. The example building is part of a residential development built in 1928, surrounded by numerous buildings of the same design. Building materials made from clay and renewable raw materials offer many advantages for indoor climate, summer heat protection, and the environment.

Experts from Architects for Future and the architectural firm enæble will discuss the urgency of the construction transition, building with clay, species conservation in buildings, and the building physics benefits of bio-based building materials in building renovation.

We will explore the possibilities of renovation using bio-based building materials using the example of a small end-of-row house in Hamburg-Harburg.
