Info-Werkstatt "Stadt selber machen"

In a public workshop we invite the inhabitants to discuss options to create a sustainable housing area (within a former hospital ground) as an example of urban development based on solidarity and climate justice. Housing for people not for profits!

As an example of urban development based on solidarity and climate justice, we want to drive forward the redevelopment of the Nordstadt Hospital site into a sustainable residential neighbourhood. This will enable the creation of affordable and accessible housing for 500 people at reasonable construction costs. To achieve this, we must prevent the regional administration from prioritising the development of office space there for start-ups in a ‘tech factory’, despite the fact that there is a significant surplus of vacant office space in Hanover, whilst there is an urgent shortage of affordable housing.

A recent survey by Hanover’s largest daily newspaper (HAZ, 8 August 26), involving 12,700 respondents, revealed that only around 12 per cent of those surveyed believe that “their voice is heard by politicians”. Thismeans that we must work together to make our voices ‘uningnorable’ and also give a voice to those who are often not heard at all: we can only shape a ‘future for all’ together! We need real options for co-creation rather than token participation.

We want to develop a new "network of expertise" called ‘Stadt selber machen’ (Shaping the City Ourselves). In Hanover, there is an active civil society which, through its years (and decades) of commitment, has acquired valuable knowledge on shaping processes of change. We want to promote dialogue and support initiatives by residents to shape the city themselves.

We’ll be illustrating our vision for the future of the Nordstadt Hospital site with a small exhibition featuring plans and facts. We want to provide information, gather ideas and discuss potential approaches to implementation.
