Sustainable Renovation of Existing Buildings Using Bio-Based Materials: The Example of a Small End-of-Row House from the 1920s

Preservation and energy-efficient renovation are the keys to a building stock that is fit for the future. The renovation of owner-occupied single-family homes, in particular, presents both great potential and a major challenge. The example building is part of a residential development built in 1928, surrounded by numerous buildings of the same design. At the hands-on construction site, participants will gain practical experience using bio-based materials in building renovation. Advantages and disadvantages will be discussed, and implementation options will be tested in practice. The event invites participants to share their expertise on future-proof construction and to replicate these practices. The focus is on enjoying collaborative work with natural materials and exchanging ideas.

From Thursday through Saturday, we would like to actively test and apply various construction methods for the energy-efficient renovation of existing buildings using bio-based building materials through a hands-on construction site. For example, we’ll insulate basement ceilings with soft wood fiber and cellulose, insulate interior walls with soft wood fiber and clay plaster, and create an airtight yet vapor-permeable layer in the roof using ESB and clay as a base for insulation made from renewable raw materials.

Experts in sustainable renovations using bio-based building materials from the architectural firms enæble and A4F, as well as a clay specialist will guide the hands-on construction site and share their experiences.
