From Offcuts to Shelf: How Can Leftovers Become New Furniture?

How does a tree become a piece of furniture – and what gets lost along the way? In our workshop, we explore the potential of leftover materials from carpentry and how they can shape the design process. Afterwards, you can get hands-on and try sawing, sanding, and different wood joints yourself.

Would you like to learn more about how wooden furniture is made in a carpentry workshop and try your hand at woodworking?

In the first part of the workshop, we will look at how a tree is being transformed into a material and eventually a piece of furniture – and what gets lost along the way.

Using concrete examples, we will show you why certain pieces of wood are discarded during the production process and how we rework them in our workshop. Using one of our shelf designs as an example, we will then explore how the availability and specific qualities of leftover materials can influence the design process, construction, and aesthetics.

In the practical part, you can get hands-on: at different stations, you can try sawing, drilling and sanding, explore different wood joints, and learn how to rework leftover sheet materials.

The workshop is open to anyone interested in making and craftsmanship. No previous experience is required. Depending on the group and participants’ experience, the focus can shift between practical techniques and questions of design.
