Excursion - rural vernacular architecture
We explore sustainable building culture and traditional craftsmanship at the Salzburger Freilichtmuseum. During a guided tour, we discover historic rural building traditions, local materials and construction techniques that have stood the test of time. Together, we ask what these resource-conscious traditions can teach us about the architecture of tomorrow.
architekturimpuls: Rediscovering Tradition – Learning from the Architecture of the Past
How did people build in the past – and what can traditional architecture teach us today?
During a 90-minute guided tour in the Salzburger Freilichtmuseum, we will explore the rural building culture of the past. What makes the museum unique is that its historic buildings were carefully dismantled at their original locations and reconstructed true to the original on the museum grounds. This allows us to experience the region’s architectural heritage and traditional rural building methods first-hand.
Among historic farmhouses, barns and workshops, we will discover regional materials, traditional construction methods and craftsmanship that have been passed down through generations.
But this is not simply a journey into the past. What can we learn from these buildings for architecture today? How did people work with locally available resources, climatic conditions and the characteristics of each site? And which principles of traditional building culture could inspire more resource-conscious and sustainable approaches to architecture today?
After the tour, we will continue our conversation in a relaxed atmosphere at Salettlwirt. We will reflect on what we have seen and discuss different perspectives on tradition, sustainability, regional materials and the future of building.
An architectural journey between building culture, craftsmanship and sustainability – with time to explore, exchange ideas and find inspiration for the architecture of tomorrow.
We look forward to an inspiring afternoon together!
